--- Begin Message ---Dear HGSE Faculty, Staff, and Students,
I write with great pleasure to tell you about two new appointments that Fernando Reimers has accepted, which will begin on January 1, 2005.
At that time, Fernando will become the Ford Foundation Professor of International Education at HGSE. Although Fernando's teaching responsibilities will remain unchanged, and he will continue as director of the International Education Program, this appointment promotes Fernando to the Senior Faculty. The professorship also marks the special high regard in which Fernando is held as a scholar, teacher, and HGSE citizen.
In addition, Fernando has agreed to lead a new Office of International Education, which will report directly to me. In that capacity, Fernando will take the lead in planning education policy roundtables, seminars, forums, and conferences focusing on international education and he will also work to promote a variety of exchanges among people concerned with primary and secondary education around the world, and especially in Latin America. Inevitably, too, Fernando will work with me to raise the funds we need to further develop HGSE's work, especially on the international side.
I am very, very pleased that Fernando has agreed to accept these appointments. In his years at HGSE, Fernando has proven himself to be a model member of our faculty as well as a distinguished voice for more effective and equitable education policies around the world. I expect that the enhanced visibility these new appointments will bring will boost Fernando to even greater prominence, nationally and internationally, and extend his reach as a scholar, teacher, government advisor, and sage voice in support of educational opportunity for all.
We will officially celebrate these appointments early in the Spring term. For now, please join me in extending unofficial congratulations to Fernando on a promotion that is abundantly deserved.
Best, Ellen
