New Delhi, Jan 17 (PTI): Contrary to Sangh Parivar�s contention that the Godhra train blaze that killed 59 kar sevaks triggering widespread communal riots was a pre-planned conspiracy, a retired Supreme Court Judge has said it was "accidental" fire.
Heading a high-level committee appointed by the UPA Government, Justice UC Banerjee also ruled out the possibility of any inflammable liquid thrown from outside the coach.
The report came under immediate attack from BJP, which called it an "extra-constitutional effort to influence the course of justice", while the then Railway Minister Nitish Kumar described it a "political stunt" in view of the coming elections.
Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was behind the appointment of the Committee, accused the Sangh Parivar of involvement in the post-Godhra riots and alleged Kumar should have properly investigated the train fire.
"With the elimination of the �petrol theory�, �miscreant activity theory� as well as the ruling out of any possibility of �electrical fire�, the fire in S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express can at this stage be ascribed as an �accidental fire�," Justice Banerjee Committee, said in its interim report submitted to Railway Board Chairman RK Singh.
Nearly a thousand people, most of them belonging to minority community, were killed in riots that followed Godhra train fire.
In the report, the Banerjee Committee said there was no scope for any miscreant activity from any external agency during the period.
