NEW DELHI: A surprise gift awaits Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf when he arrives in the city for the Sunday ODI. He will be handed over his birth certificate by the Union government.

After a month of frantic searching, officials of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) have finally been able to trace Musharraf's birth records.

It all began when Musharraf's mother, Begum Zarin, visited Smt Girdhar Lal Hospital in Kamla Market during her visit to India in March 2005.

She mentioned that her two sons, Javed (the General's elder brother) and Pervez, were born here and requested the authorities to provide their birth certificates.

"It was only then that we realised that Musharraf was born here. But the hospital does not preserve records that are so old.

"The matter was handed over to NDMC, the authority that issued birth certificates in 1941," said Dr Indira Yadav, the medical superintendent of the hospital.

"It was difficult to trace the records, but we finally found them. The action was taken after we got a written request from the PM's Office," said NDMC spokesperson Madan Thapliyal.

According to him, the records of a female child born on July 19, 1941, and two male children on August 11, 1942, and July 22, 1945, have been located.

The records show the name of father as Musharraf and the grandfather's name as Shaffiuddin.

The name of the mother is, however, not mentioned. The female child is Pervez Musharraf's elder sister.

After locating the records, NDMC has issued three certificates for the Musharraf siblings.

"All the three certificates are ready now, the PMO can hand it over whenever it wants," said Thapliyal.
