Every stusy is done with an objective and some of the issues may be beyond the
scope of discussion by a study.

Thanks for raising two important issues and I will try to address it.

1. Agar is a long-term plantation crop. A profitable plantation may be of 15
years cycle or more.

2. At the end of 15 years a person can earn 25-30 lakhs of Rupees from each
hectare of land.

Income can be increased further by in intercropping vegetable/pulses or
aromatic plants during first 3-5 years of plantation and with medicinal plants
like Sarpagandha for another few year. Ginger/Turmeric may also be planted.

Agar tree is suitable for growing on field boundaries, on borders of gardens,
school compounds, office compounds, parks and residential sites, along banks of
ponds, tanks, canals and roads etc. Tea growing situation is also ideal for
agar tree. With the increasing demand of agarwood, it is being introduced as
shade tree in tea plantation particularly in Upper Assam with success.

*** Out of all the myriad of data, the two most critical, stand out by
their absence.

WHAT is the per acre production of Sachi ( Agarwood )trees or the essential
oil, the end product?

And how many years does it take to get even a drop of it, from the time of
planting the seedlings?

These two pieces of information alone would show whether it is a worthwhile
undertaking for the subsistence farmer, or even the industrial farmer.

And their absence show the usefulness of the output of all these agencies
and their high-sounding statistics.
