Trekking ,hiking around and near Guwahati city

1) Amchang wild life ---- one hour walking from Bonda forest beat office near 
narengi. Chances of viewing wild life bright ,specially capped languor. Can be 
a good educative tour for flora and faunal diversity . How charcoal making had 
destroyed the forest could be shown to the students. Good spot for herpetology 
enthusist.

2) Amchang-jorabat to Sonapur—via Tepasia tea estate , a two and half hour 
trekking through lash green forest and tea garden . Starting point Amching- 
Jorabat near Army cantonment end side . Journey ends at Nagoan-Guwahati road at 
Kamarkuchi . Just five km trekking.

3) Khamranga beel at Thakurkuchi—16 km from Noonmati. Opposite to Tkakurkuchi 
railway station. Picnic spot for small group. Entry point Thakurkuchi village 
with small car and through Hajongbori village on foot crossing the railway 
line. One has to walk around a km to the exact spot if gone by Bus. Jeep 
through. Have chances to see winter birds specially ducks ,teals,jacanas and 
raptor species.

4) Deepor beel Sanctuary—Entry point Gorchuck chari ali near balaji temple 5 km 
from jalukbari national high way. Motor able and small buses can be hired. 
Trekker jeep are also available at half an hour interval. A Ramser site(an 
wetland of international importance) which is the lone Ramser site in 
Assam.Wild life office and the watchtower can be utilized for viewing thousands 
of water birds.

5) Pobitora WL –48 km from city via sonapur /Kamarpur. 38 km via 
Noonmati/Chandrapur crossing river kolong. Cont Ranger officer 03678-48059) for 
booking of IB at a nominal rate of Rs 120/ per two beded room . Tourisim lodge 
nearby. Rates are higher. Dormatory 200 per bed.

6) Orang National Park—160 km from Guwahati. Famous for winter birds and 
rhinos. Dormatory facility available for small group of 14-15 people. Contact 
in advance with DFO WL , Mongoldoi tel 0914-22065 (0) Ideal location for 
birder. Rhino ,tiger and Bengal florican are important species. A tourist lodge 
has also started business from the current year.

7) Jengdia beel-- An Important Bird Area(IBA) site in North Guwahati. Three km 
from the famous Dirgeswari temple near Baka village. Habitat of Greater 
Adjutant Stork and also white Ramp Vultures are often seen.

8) Nongkhyllyam Wl --- Just 50 km away from Guwahati city . Travel 15 km from 
Jorabat towards Shillong. On reaching umling village just look out for IOCL 
petrol pamp and take right turn. Drive 16 km towards Lailod village and you are 
in this beautiful wild life near river Umtro. Only problem is, these 16 km 
stretch is totally inhabited area. So take extra care for food and vehicle 
puncher possibility. Take leach guard during rainy season, otherwise ok in 
winter. Forest IB had been destroyed by the wild elephant recently.

9) GARBHANGA RESERVR FOREST—Near Jalukbari of Guwahati city is another pristine 
area in the vicinity of greater Guwahati. Can be approached from Basistha 
temple also. It is having an area of 90 sq kilo meter .Both Rani Reserve forest 
and Garbhanga Reserve area constitutes this hilly terrain which is analogues to 
Meghalaya hills which gives greater loitering area for animals .Mammals such as 
Hoolock Gibbon, Assamese Macaque ,Capped Languor , Slow Loris ,Leopard, Jungle 
Cat , Leopard Cat, three species of Civet Mongoose, Sam bar, Barking Deer and 
Chinese Pangolin have been recorded in the area besides large herds of 
elephants are seen in the area.

10) Chandubi beel—An ideal picnic spot just 70 km away from the city humdrum. 
Road conditions allows only winter visit. Guwahati-Mirza-Loharghat- Rajapara is 
the only approach. A beautiful lake which is acreation of 1897 earthquake. A 
tourist lodge on the lake side and boating facility available. Also an IBA site 
as declared by BNHS and IBCN( international bird conservation network)

11) Besides above named spots more tourist attracting places like trekking to 
Sattergaon inside Garbhanga , trekking inside Amchang from Ghoguwa(south 
ending) river ferry journey from chunchali to Brahmaputra chapori (Bihari 
village) etc can be arranged on demand and test of the visitor.
