Call to hoist Tricolour on Republic Day

Guwahati: Several Guwahati based working journalists and writers including
noted author Nirupama Bargohain and veteran journalist Dhirendranath
Chakravorty have made an appeal to the people of Assam and the Northeast to
hoist the Indian National Flag atop their houses and in their own localities on
the occasion of 59th Republic Day of the country on January 26.

In a statement they said that the Republic Day of the country should be
celebrated by the citizens in recognition to the sacrifices made by the
martyrs, who accepted martyrdom to wrest liberty for their compatriots. Many of
their colleagues also under underwent tremendous hardship to free the country
from the colonial yoke.

The people of the state should remember those martyrs and freedom fighters on
occasions like Independence Day and the Republic Day by hoisting the
Tricolour in a befitting manner, said the signatories of the appeal.

They also made an appeal to the people of the city to take part in the
function being organized by them on the Guwahati Press Club campus at 11 a.m.
on January 26 on the occasion of the Republic Day. Four militant outfits of
Northeast have already imposed a ban on the celebration of Republic Day and
also called for a General Strike on that day in the region.

The signatories of the appeal also include Rupam Baruah, Ajit Patowary, Nava
Thakuria, Hiten Mahanta, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Bhupen Bargohain, Promode Kalita,
Girin Karji, Kumud Das, Manish Goswami, Sabita Lahkar and Mukul Kalita.
