Hi All, It is heartening to note that Gauhati Univerity has planned to Celebrate its Diamond Jubilee with a year long programme. It was indeed a dream come true for thousands of people of Assam who had relentlessly agitated for decades for an Institute of Higer Education in the Province when Gauhati University was established on 26 January 1948. For a long time, the only university in the entire eastern region was at Calcutta. Gauhati University was incorporated by an Act of 1947. It started functioning on 26 January 1948. Starting with 17 affilliated colleges and 8 PG departments in 1948, Gauhati University, today, has 38 PG Departments and a Satellite campus at Kokrajhar besides PGCS and a constituent Law College (University Law College). It has 205 affilliated colleges offering UG and PG courses in the faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Law, Engineering and Medicine. Gauhati University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The Inaugural Ceremony of the Diamond Jubillee programme of this old and premier institution will be held on 26 January with a day long programme. The Programme will start with the hoisting of University flag by the Vice-Chancellor of University, Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury. A galaxy of eminent personalities of the Country as well as a good number of NRI will be present in the Inaugural function. All are welcome! Dr Jogen Ch Kalita.
