CPI leader assaulted by cop, dies >From a Correspondent MORIGAON, July 2: Morigaon District CPI Committee general secretary Manoj Deka today succumbed to the injuries which he had sustained when a police constable allegedly beat him up badly while conducting a search operation in Morigaon yesterday. According to sources, constable Rafiqul Islam beat up the CPI leader badly in front of Morigaon Police Station OC Kamal Bora during a search operation yesterday. The CPI leader was immediately taken to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries this evening. According to GMCH sources, Deka was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition with life support. Meanwhile, a great deal of sensation is prevailing in Morigaon where the CPI and its various organizations took to the streets demanding exemplary punishment to the erring policeman. The protesters also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Morigaon DC and demanding punishment to the erring police constable. The Morigaon Birodhi Aikya Mancha has called a 12-hour Morigaon district bandh from 5 am on July 5. CPI leader Munin Mahanta, AGP, AGP-P and other parties strongly condemned the killing. Meanwhile, the Morigaon district committees of the AISF and the AIY registered a case at the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) in this connection.
