Row over animal sacrifice for UPA BY MANOJ ANAND
Guwahati July 28: Animal rights activists are up in arms against politicians for sacrificing animals in Kamakhya temple, atop the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati. The problem started after a Samajwadi Party MLA from Madhya Pradesh arrived to perform a yagna to sacrifice 15 buffaloes and 400 goats. The controversial MLA, Kishore Samrite, who says he performed this sacrifice on behalf of his party president Mulayam Singh Yadav and general secretary Amar Singh, told this newspaper: "I performed this yagna and sacrifice at the Kamakhya temple with the consent of Mr Singh. After winning the trust vote in the Parliament, we want to see our Netaji (Mulayam Singh Yadav) as the Prime Minister of India in near future, so this special yagna has been performed." The SP MLA, who is accompanied by other party leaders, including district president Rajkumar Nageshwar, said: "The yagna and sacrifice started on last Monday and will conclude on Wednesday." If the Samajwadi Party MLA is to be believed, the yagna and sacrifices were performed after Mr Amar Singhs wish to win the trust motion in the Parliament was fulfilled. According to temple sources, they intend to sacrifice 15 buffaloes out of which six have been already sacrificed till Monday. They have also sacrificed 242 goats so far. The MLA is spending more than Rs 20 lakhs on this yagna, which has been performed by a team of priests headed by Ranjit Sarma at the Kamakhya temple.
