"Every child and young person under 18 has rights and responsibilities. They are protected by the United Nations Convention on the rights of the child. It has been signed by every country in the world, except the USA and Somalia," said Amarjyoti Sarma, assistant director, Project East, SOS Children's Villages, India while taking part in a seminar on "Child Rights and Children Protection Policies."
Delivering his speech as an appointed speaker in the seminar held at SOS, Bhakatpara on July 29, Sarma stressed the need of protecting the children from physical sexual and emotional abuses and providing them their rights to expression, refreshment, privacy, rights to good quality healthcare, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment, rights to education, etc for their all round development as described in a series of `articles' of the UNO. Sarma also explained on the role of the SOS Children's Villages spread in 132 countries over the world in protecting the child rights. Speaking on the occasion, senior advocate Subhash Sarkar discussed on various acts of the Indian Government like juvenile justice, child marriage, child labour etc. while Jamuna Daimary, Supervisor of Pub Mangaldoi ICDS under the Social Welfare Department, Govt of Assam, explained about different developmental schemes for the children and mother under the ICDS.
