There is room for collaboration between Indian Institute of Crop
Processing Technology, Thanjavur (Tamil Nadu) and Assam Agricultural
University to exploit the potential in the agriculture sector. Dr K
Alagasundaram, Director of the Thanjavur-based institute which
operates under Ministry of Food Processing Industries, said this at
the inaugural function of the two-day national seminar on `Emerging
trends and opportunities in grain processing sector with special
reference to north-eastern States' at Dr MC Das Memorial Auditorium
at AAU on Tuesday.
AAU Vice Chancellor Dr SS Baghel called for generation and
application of improved technologies for value addition of food
grains. He expressed his gratitude towards Indian Institute of Crop
Processing Technology for choosing AAU as the venue for the
seminar `which holds great significance.' Director of the Lahdoigarh-
based Central Muga Eri Research and Training Institute Dr R
Chakravarty was the chief guest at the inaugural function. Director
of Research (Agriculture) of AAU Dr NN Sarmah also addressed the
gathering.
Several eminent scientists from various parts of the country and
successful entrepreneurs from the food processing sector attended the
seminar which was held with a view to exploring and sensitizing
stakeholders on the strategies for value addition of food grains, Dr
Nivedita Deka, organizing secretary and assistant professor in the
Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management of AAU,
said.
A number of research papers and posters were presented by the
participants in the seminar which concluded today.
Dr BK Barooah, professor and head of the Department of Agricultural
Economics and Farm Management of AAU delivered the welcome address in
the inaugural function, also attended by local entrepreneurs, faculty
members, scientists and students of AAU. The vote of thanks was
offered by Dr Deka. The seminar was jointly organized by Indian
Institute of Crop Processing Technology, Ministry of Food Processing
Industries and AAU.
