Hi,
Instead of thinking about safeguarding Kamrupi dialect i think we should think
about safeguarding Assamese language.Even if Kamrupi which is a dialect and not
a language becomes extinct we can revive it later on.

Are we living in a fool's paradise? Do you know what the results of the 2001
census were? Do you think that Assamese is still the single-largest spoken
language in Assam? Many of us are posting in various forums that within the
next 10 years we would become minority in our own land. But what nobody knows
is that we have already become minority.

According to the 2001 census Assam has already become a Bengali majority state.
According to it the percentage of Bengali-speaking ppl in Assam is 45% out of
which 15 % are Bengali-speaking Hindus who came mostly during the partition of
our country but the remaining 30% consists of Bengali-speaking Muslims. Why 45%
of the population being Bengali-speaking makes Assam Bengali majority is
because the tribal population of Assam(of which Bodo is the largest tribe) who
constitute around 20% of the population have alienated themselves from the
Assamese fold and have carved out their separate identity. Whatever be the
case, we are in a grave danger of losing our identity forever!

But, still there is hope! A sizeable population of the Bangladeshis are there
in the Bengali-speaking Barak valley. So the proportion of Bengali-speaking ppl
in the Brahmaputra valley is not equal to 45% of the entire population of
Assam. It's high time that we rise from our deep sleep and understand the
gravity of the situation. Kindly spread this message to as many as possible.
