Steve - Got it.  Clearly counting all the bits wouldn't be a problem.  The
intent of the problem is to only count 1 bits.

Tony - Good question, I'm really interested in the fastest solution
reqardless of instructions and really I'm looking for what folks think
will be the type of routine implemented in z196 instruction so the speed
can be compared to see if it is close to 5 at least in some cases.

John Gilmore - the 4 instruction loop solution I coded uses the same
reference table you described but avoids the TROO and scratch storage
requiement by doing IC of string byte and then antoher IC from table
followed by AR and BXLE.  In essence the TRT and summation are combined.

All - I've gotten one really nice solution that is at least 4 times faster
than mine for strings longer than a few bytes and has a relatively small
fixed working storage requirement.  I'll be interested to see if there are
more.
