I am often the odd man out here, and in that tradition I have found most of
this thread unsatisfactory.
The LE makes now excellent dynamic storage-management (both heap and stack) and
error-handling machinery available, ready to use.
Those of you who have your own such high-quality machinery in hand don't need
the LE. The rest of you should probably use it much of the time (where it is
usable, and not of course in the bowels of z/OS).
It is perhaps rude to say so; but a good many of the tired, wholly predictable
criticisms of the LE that have been rehearsed here come repeatedly from people
who do not appear to know where to use the facilities it makes available,
people who, for example, use heap storage for DSAs.
