Jake, I've recommended (and lent my copy of) Kevin McQuillen's book http://www.amazon.com/MVS-Assembler-Language-Kevin-McQuillen/dp/0911625348 to several people over the years. It's a step-by-step tutorial, and most of the people have found it useful, though few ended up as long-term assembler programmers. You are best off looking at existing programs that are well commented, and working with the Principles of Operation, Data Management Macros, High Level Assembler, and the Assembler Services manuals. If you get stuck on something, and are still baffled *after RTFM*, ask an assembler programmer to explain it to you.
There is also a lot to be gained by compiling COBOL programs with the LIST option, which will give you an idea of what assembler instructions are required to achieve the same result as a COBOL verb.
