It's a valid representation not of a file name but of a directory name:
364 $ mkdir -p . "-f ./"
365 $ ls -al
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 paulgilm staff 68 Dec 4 09:40 -f .
drwxr-xr-x 3 paulgilm staff 102 Dec 4 09:40 .
drwxr-xr-x+ 39 paulgilm staff 4862 Dec 4 08:10 ..
And, no, I wouldn't advise it. But I would also recommend that
any programs be able to deal with it if it exists.
