When I was required to debug automated fuel payment message problems in the
early 80's (similar to bank ATM's), using a scope and traces to find an SDLC
sequence error, I thought surely the developers of SDLC and NRZI are sitting
in padded rooms somewhere.

No disrespect intended, NRZI is (IMHO) an eloquent solution, but wading
through reams of trace output to find intermittent discrepancies in network
traffic was mind-numbing.

Right! For some of us, a break "character" is a string of ten or
more one bits on an asynchronous transmission line <G>
