I should like to recommend that notional HLASM problems be posted as
such here first, i.e., before HLASM enhancements to resolve them are
requested.

More often than not resolutions that use only existing HLASM
facilities are possible: The OP is then left with egg on his face, and
our time is wasted.

To be specific here, there are few, perhaps no circumstances in which
in an HLASM environmrent one must resort to by-eye character counts.

One writes, say,

|&text     setc  '<Whatever you like>'    --character string
|&ktext   seta  k'&text          --its length
| . . .

This can be done anywhere; in particular it can be done in open code,
outside the confines of a MACRO/MEND pair.
