You can easily do this by using a global variable. E.g.
    GBLC &MAC123AREA
    AIF  ('&MAC123AREA' EQ '').FIRSTCALL
    AIF  ('&MAC123AREA' EQ '&AREA').AREAOK
    MNOTE 8,'AREA=&AREA does not match previous area of &MAC123AREA'
    MEXIT ,
.FIRSTCALL ANOP ,
&MAC123AREA SETC '&AREA'
.AREAOK ANOP ,
