Someone (I forgot who...) said they'd like an instruction that would load a number from memory, add to it, and store it back.
In referring to the S/360, I said that it "Would have been useful to have one", viz, such an instruction.
Take a look at the LOAD AND ADD (and many similarly related instructions) in the latest Principles of Operation. They're all block-concurrent.
