Gas for heating and cooking is sold in the UK and US in Therms, and in
many countries in cubic metres or cubic feet. The notion of selling
fuel gas by the therm allows for different energy content, which
variance was much more significant when gas was manufactured from
coal, and contained mostly hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon
dioxide. Now that's it's virtually all natural gas from the ground,
which is 90+% methane, it's pretty standard.

Here in Ontario, my gas bill shows usage in cubic metres, but there is
an adjustment factor for the heat content, which hasn't changed for
years.
