The correct solution is for the auto-reply to be sent by an auto-reply daemon which keeps track of who it has sent a auto-reply to and then does not send another in response to subsequent messages from the same sender. Once the person turns it off it purges its list and the next time an auto-reply is set up the daemon starts with an empty "I've told already - don't tell again" list.
