Sorry for the late post. Catching up on email. Ze'ev,
I think the problem is what you ported. In my opinion, you were not "refreshing the mainframe", you were porting code that goes against the mainframe mindset. On the mainframe, we want code that is maintainable by someone other than the author. Code that is mostly clear about what it is doing. And code that can be maintained by "normal" programmers (as opposed to the "power" programs dedicated to R&D). PCRE violates all these principles. Just my opinion, but PCRE is about the worse thing about Pearl that ever existed. I am not surprised that nobody wanted to download it. Well, I was trying to refresh the mainframe by bringing in some open source and ported a whole library [PCRE for z/OS see zaconsultants.net ]. Here are the issues, beyond aging programmers: #1 no takers - almost nobody even tried to download it. #2 no volunteers - it is extremely hard to find somebody who would want to help in areas that I am not expert in (especially Rexx interface) #3 no legal platform to do open source - those who expressed interest balked on the need to publish it as open source, or worse, they explained that no such thing could be installed on their facilities.
