Oh, I do not think that is true John. Most companies would have failed by now if management could not balance the needs of the stockholders vs. the company vs. the employees at least acceptably well.
Don't forget, most of us are put in near impossible positions sometimes, managing people well means helping or in some cases, making, the people you manage successful. Oftimes that means letting them step back and painfully rediscover that what you told them in the first place is the right way to go about doing something. You have to have clear and non-egocentric vision to do that.
