Indeed, the right tool can make a world of difference.  Try editing a Word 
document with WordPerfect (yes, it does still exist and continues to be 
updated!) and turn on "reveal codes".  It is still amazing to see all the 
unnecessary cr*p a Word document creates.

ver 5 (14MB) ver 7 (32MB) - don't have 6 here --but the jump was back
then. My guess then was different tool (i.e. one that creates the logo
on every page for every page as opposed to use pointers to the same logo
from each page or (even worse) font-definitions for each and every
page).

The shrinking might be related to a rediscovery of old techniques.
