For specifics re C being 'cruft'y: it has much of the same baggage that assembler has. Thus, saying assembler has cruft is like comparing a red apple to a yellow apple and declaring the yellow apple better. While personal taste does have some say in the 'opinion' of which apple to eat, it doesn't give much value to calling the red apple 'cruft'y since it is just an opinion. Though, yes, C and C++ people do have that tendency to want to make the whole world conform to them.
