Strange code snippet

HI all 
I found the following code on 2 different client systems (one of them in an IMS 
sample user exit). 

L R8,CVTPTR 
L R8,CVTTCBP-CVT(,R8) 
L R8,4(,R8) 

Can anybody think of a reason why I should not rather use L R8,PSATOLD-PSA ?
