though I completely agree it is magical to people when discovery works

Not at all! You've been incredibly encouraging - which is much appreciated!
I think his idea of magic was more like "it sounds like smoke and
mirrors". I think the idea of doing discovery in a stealthy way, and
the idea of O(1) scalability both sounded like BS to him - at least
that's how I understood what I heard.
I always enjoy giving talks. I just have to write the talk first ;-)
