Xymon/Big Brother agents use a simple format
$BB $BBDISP "status $MACHINE.$COLUMN $COLOR `date`
${MSG} "
$BB = Binary command to send to server
$BBDISP = Display server to receive the contents
$MACHINE = hostname of the client
$COLUMN = name of the test/service
$COLOR = red/yellow/green/etc, status of the alert
`date` = current date/time
${MSG} = Contents of the alert
There are probably a few other things I missed, but you can start with this.
