If this project can work out how to do discovery well it would certainly put it in a unique market space.

I have used HP Network Node manager (and seriously affected a production network doing discovery), CA Spectrum (took over 7 days to discover a 5000+ node network). Spectrum produces a network topology map. Not the easiest thing to keep current though. Blue Stripe does discovery using an agent installed on client nodes. Each agent tracks connections to other things (as well as process connections on its own node). Very interesting seeing connections to systems you didn't know talked to each other. OpenNMS does network (and "service") discovery. Have not really used it though. Opnet uses network taps. > Can we present/sell this as a form of ITIL CMDB? Sure.
