Hi Michiel,
to run 2.0.0 you'll need:
A system with a minimum of 100 MB free RAM per SMTP-worker (default is 5)!
- Perl version 5.8.8 (compiled for multithreading !!!!) with the
following installed modules:
- threads 1.69 (I think any of the 1.6x should run, but 1.69 is tested)
- threads::shared 1.18
- Threads::Queue 2.06
- IO::Poll 0.07 (should be default at 5.8.8)
- all modules running on 1.3.5 for your needs (SPF ......)
To use the additional funktions of 2.0.0 you'll need:
- Email::MIME::Modifier 1.442
- MIME::Types 1.23
- Convert::TNEF 0.17
- Mail::DKIM::Verifier 0.30_1
To use the ASSP_OCR Plugin you'll need:
I recommed a system with a fast multicore CPU or more than one CPU.
- File::Which 0.05 (default in 5.8.8)
- PDF::OCR 1.4
- Email::MIME 1.861
- installed applications: tesseract , ImageMagick (with Perl module
Image::Magick 6.3.7), pdftk
How ever, this requirements are OS-independent !
The ASSP-useraccount must have full rights to the ASSP-directory and
subdirectories!
Particularly, using a lower versions of the threads modules may cause in a
unexpected behavior or crash of ASSP!
The SMTP-performance of 2.0.0 is higher than 1.3.5, but at this time,
there is additional code in 2.0.0 which slows down ASSP a little. This is
by design and will be changed, if we get running 2.0.0 "solid rock"!
>And with busy I mean sometimes a 15 second timeout..
Most of time the reason for a long timeout in ASSP is a bad DNS
configuration or the use of a slow DNS server. The SPF,RBL,URIBL,DKIM (and
some more) features using DNS querys to get there results. Assuming a not
noprocessing, not whitelisted HAM and the use of all features of ASSP
(URIBL and clamavd doing the most of the DNS querys), it is possible that
ASSP makes more than 100 DNS querys for that email! In a professional
surrounding, I recommed using an own DNS server (with the right Rootserver
table), which do not forward any query to an other DNS server. The respond
time for that DNS server sould be less than 2 seconds - typical less than
1 second! What I want to say is - if you have a slow DNS configuration
(for any reason), you can use 100 SMTP-workers (do try this), but ASSP
2.0.0 will not be faster than any single thread version!!!

[Assp-test] question about assp 2.0 and asp 1.3.5 performance
Hi,
I am having some performance issues with the 1.3.* version of ASSP.
I am seeing some outage or time-outs , mostly because ASSP is a single
threaded process and can not handle the amount of concurrent smtp
sessions/mails per second .
The problem is that sometimes ASSP is too busy handling connections and
our monitoring is alerting.
And with busy I mean sometimes a 15 second timeout..
That is why I want to test the new 2.0 version because it can handle a
more effective load by using threads ...
Is this a misconception or am I right?
Question I got about the 2.* version is : What is the best way to
install it on a CentOS 5 box with the default perl installation?
I reccon that the version is too old and I have to upgrade my Perl
installation but I am not very happy with upgrading my Perl installation
and see a real live server spam filter break and not accepting any more
connections..
Are there people using the ASSP 2.* version on CentOS linux with the
default perl version installed or do they have a simple upgrade path I
can follow from the 1.3.5 version to 2.0 ?
Sorry for all my questions and perhaps not so good english :)
Thanks for any kind help and reactions.
Kind Regards,
Michiel
