That MTA can be running on another server or even running on someone else’s
system.
I work for an ISP and if customers want to run their own exchange you could ask
them to enable VRFY but installing LDAP is too complicated. And each MTA would
have their own account…. VRFY could be treated as an extra. If it’s disabled
no mail will be verified, if it’s on it is used to determine if it’s a local
user.

When your MTA is a Plesk with a few hundred domains and all kind of
mail-accounts and running on another server, your solution is getting less and
less attractive. I see a lot of advantages for the setups I’m running. And if
your solution is better off with flatfile or LDAP you should use just that….

There are a lot of setups possible with ASSP and I guess some more I didn’t
even think of.

I'm not talking about an implementing of VRFY in ASSP - if anyone want ASSP to
verify the recipient without LDAP, the only way is the flatfile. Why not using
this file from the MTA, if it is there?
The implementation of VRFY in the way described here, would not be easy to do!
I prefer using LDAP and shure there are a lot of LDAP-servers available for the
most OS!

Are you talking about a future implementation of VRFY or how ASSP is working
now?
Because as ASSP is now, there not really a need to get that table.
I can just skip domain-checking and let my MTA do it or the other way around…
ASSP with a localdomain list and let the MTA relay everything…

I think it’s wise to wait until a scheme like VRFY will be implemented….. and
see from there…
Who knows how many problems that will give on itself…

What about exporting/using this list (mailertable) and writing a very small and
simple Perl script to generate an ASSP-flatfile! This file could be shared for
all ASSP in your domain!
