I gave up, because OCR requires PerlIO:Scalar 0.05. The latter (on
the latest Leopard) produces:
The most recent version "0.05" of the module "PerlIO::scalar"
is part of the perl-5.10.0 distribution. To install that, you need to run
force install PerlIO::scalar --or--
install R/RG/RGARCIA/perl-5.10.0.tar.gz
when I try a cpan installation. I'm leery of creating a non-standard
(at least to OS X) installation of perl, due to support and
maintenance issues. Equally, I'm nervous of the idea of
force-installing it under the default perl 5.8.8.
