Have you looked at ps output?  Cron can very easily start multiple  
copies of ASSP. I've seen it happen many times.

Using launchd solves this, and affords you keeping ASSP startup and  
logging data out of syslog.

Cron is also deprecated as a launcher on OSX 10.4 forward.
