In addition to the default signatures, I've been using the Sanesecurity signatures as well. My system's got a Xeon 3.4GHz processor and 4GB of RAM in it. It seems to me that it should be sufficient enough to be able to handle the extra signatures. I'll try it without the Sanesecurity signatures and see if it's any better.
