Yes, the check for a new version is done every time. "no auto update" meens - the check is done (downloading the version.txt file), but no download of the 'assp.gz' file, even if the version in download location is newer. In this case you'll see a hint in GUI's top and a log line. The autoupdate function is completely done in the Maintenance-Thread (10000) - and it seems impossible that it could affect the MainThread or any SMTP-Worker.
