self-signed cert - and it is this that causes you to lose the auth 

aspect to SSL (no way to prove you are who you claim to be).
You deliberately downplay the importance of the "auth aspect" (as you call 
it) and thereby redefine "a certified connection". I don't consider it "an 
aspect" but part of the definition of a "secure connection".
