well... that fits your reality, but when it comes to a program (ASSP)
used in a number of different other realities, you can't just look at
"me and here" ... please :) !

> Then all you need is a simple script that deletes based on file age.

exactly, but, that should NOT be a task for ASSP; all ASSP should do
(given this will ever be implemented) will be storing the attachments
and stripping them from the given message, replacing them with an
URI; all the manteinance of the attachments storage should instead be
offloaded to whatever *external* script which the adming may schedule
at will and configure as he likes more

> Maybe this process could be moved to a separate worker thread

No, seriously, such a "cleanup" is NOT a task for ASSP, it should be
handled separately; sure, it may be included inside the "rebuild" but,
again, I do NOT believe that this is something ASSP should deal with,
see, one may just want to delete files "older than"; someone else may
instead want to compress them and then remove older archives, another
one may want to upload them on some "cloud storage" and then some...
so, this does NOT belong to ASSP; a separate script will fit and, all
in all, a decent admin should be able to put together such a script and
fit his personal needs :)

this is totally OT, nothing ASSP can or should do; sure, finding a
solution to the above may be a need for someone, but this isn't a task
for ASSP or the ASSP developers
