The BerkeleyDB uses a shared ENV (in tmpDB). All changes are written to
this location. If ASSP terminates normaly, these temporary data are merged
in to the real DB.
If ASSP terminates not normaly or any upgrade is done - all data in /tmpDB
are deleted.
So if the rebuild has produced the hmmDB and finaly assp is stopped with
an error - the hmmDB is gone at the next start.
If 'MaintenanceLog' is set to ON, you should see the following message
(and no error) short before assp has finished to work.

Just setup new Fedora 17 x86 with assp build 12211, Perl 5.14.2
RebuildspamDB ran successfully processing 20K files (Had to manually
delete
about 50 messages that rebuild was permanently stalling on)
After rebuild completed, HMM was enabled and working
