What is your version of IMSS?
>From the log you posted it looks like Trend does not support ESMTP
since it does not know EHLO.

I suspect this is an IMSS issue, probably some rfc violation like you said.
I can not imagine that the truncation of messages causes the "." not
to be sent since this is not a part of the message but is really a
command signaling the end of the message.
I could be wrong of course.
