Hello, The comments passed along from SPAM-L seem to me to boil down to issues with programming style rather than any actual issues with the product. We implemented ASSP in November, and are extremely pleased with the results. We've even had one user declare undying love for us as a result - I've never had a user do that before!
Making some rash generalizations, I would say that the same people who are complaining will blithely use closed-source software without a second thought despite known vulnerabilities (think Outlook and other MS products). They're applying a double standard based on the fact that Fritz is willing to do the work and share it openly. BTW, I'm not much of a programmer, but after a few minutes in the assp.pl file I have to say that I find it easier to follow than most of the perl scripts I've looked at lately. Maybe it's my age, but calling it "spaghetti code" shows only that they have failed to grok one of the fundamental principles of perl - There Is More Than One Way To Do It. The detractors don't like the coding style, so they complain about the product. If they've got a problem with a specific function or security issue, that's one thing. If their only complaint is that Fritz has his own style of well-commented coding that doesn't match their coding styles then they need to get over themselves. Out of general curiosity, what product(s) have the detractors written that provides the same power as ASSP? A recent post regarding formmail brings to mind the nms Project (http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/) that identified real problems with perl scripts and actually did something productive instead of whining. Here's an evil thought - they wouldn't happen to be in the business of providing closed source commercial anti-spam solutions, would they?
