assp is really a flexible solution, so it depends on your needs. If you have 
heavy loads and some spare hardware you can have different approach.

that's what i use now:

-) assp on  host1 doing most of the filtering
-) a store and forward mail server on a second host to manage all assp 
dropped connections + doing antivirus, uribl and maybe other content based 
filters
-) a third host with the real mail server, receiving very few connetions, 
only from the internal lan, with zero spam.
