Instead of asking the developers to put work into something of limited
utility, you could run rebuildspamdb at a low priority.  Renice on Linux or
START /LOW on Windows.  

Also, rebuildspamdb can be run from another machine, using a mapped drive.
My low end hardware Linux based installations run rebuildspamdb on beefy
Windows using a drive mapped with Samba.  Of course, this requires Perl be
installed on the machine you are running it from.
