FYI, rebooting sendmail solved this.
Hell if I know why, but the system has been up for 141 days.
It may well be I had a cached version of virtusertable at some point as I 
had experimented with putting @nexstra.com in there and then took it out, 
maybe sendmail neglected to reread the file when I told it to ... who knows. 
But its working now !!!
