My experience every time I get that error is that it's not assp...something with the network, NIC, routing...whatever. Try a direct telnet to the other server on port 25 (or wherever you're sending it) from the assp box. See if you can connect. If you can't then it's not assp. I never can when I get that error...it's usually something with the other server when I see it.
