My experience every time I get that error is that it's not assp...something
with the network, NIC, routing...whatever.  Try a direct telnet to the other
server on port 25 (or wherever you're sending it) from the assp box.  See if
you can connect.  If you can't then it's not assp.  I never can when I get
that error...it's usually something with the other server when I see it.

thanks for the answer. I tried with the 1.3.1 but the problem remains. there
must be something else. can it be that the perl runtime cannot open the
sockets?
i dont think the problem is really caused by assp, since it was running for
3 months and now not anymore. i already downloaded a fresh installation and
tried that one without success. i reinstalled perl, also no success.
