I thought so as well, but actually.. defragging just finished.

Yesterday the box spent ~35 seconds on average for handling any given smtp
session, and the CPU was peaking constantly.
Today I'm averaging 1.2 seconds, and CPU is idling happily at 3-4%.

Problem solved, thank you Servei, you've saved me hours of cursing :)
