Well, I'm in perhaps a unique situation of protecting my own
personal email server (serving my family and a few friends)
and can handle the delays or whitelist the senders.

Yes, exactly my point. A delay is very effective, but not very
user-friendly. AFAIK, SMTP was never intended for direct delivery but
people nowadays don't expect anything else (well, i have more than once
delay times of over 20 minuts or longer when sending to hotmail).
