I understand. I think it may be worth your while, that is if you care, 
to just teach him a few basics of the command line. You only need to use 
a few commands to search the emails. Who knows, you may give him a 
headstart into a linux career, or at least spark some interest.

I feel your pain. What city is that?
It won't be long before more linux positions become available at your 
place. Since I have noticed a steady increase in the use of linux both 
for servers as well as desktop.
