Are there people out there really pinging mail servers once every - say - 6 hours with made up user names to see if they exist ? How many thousands will they have to try to get anything worthwhile out of it and how long - with such large gaps between pings to avoid blacklisting - would this take ?
Are there people that do this? Absolutely. Is it lucrative? That depends on what you are doing, and if you *really* know what you are doing. How long would it take? That depends on how you are doing it and how big a zombie/bot army you have control of and how coordinated all of your tasks are.
It's fruitless and I'd be surprised if anyone could be bothered - there are far easier ways to harvest email addresses.
Its not just about harvesting addresses to later spam. Thats the easy stuff.
