The difficulty in understanding LDAP is separating the communication 
protocol (which is what LDAP really is) from the implementation (which 
is where everybody spends so much time).  LDAP is just a protocol, like 
SMTP, IMAP, or any other, that allows clients to request information 
from servers (though LDAP is focused on requesting "directory" information).

The biggest leap is grasping that concept - that LDAP is a protocol, and 
there is no "standard database" that you must (or even should) use.  
What, and how, you store information to be retrievable by LDAP is 
totally up to you.  Re-read these paragraphs until the light bulb comes on.
